Activities at Breckenridge

There is more to do at Breck than ski and ride. Whether it’s exploring the Country Boy Mine, the only authentic mine in Summit County, snowmobiling in the backcountry surrounding the Continental Divide or dogsledding with Siberian Huskies, Breckenridge has a host of high alpine activities to keep your vacation fun-filled and action-packed. Museums

Barney Ford House Museum.

Located on Breckenridge’s Historic Main Street, this 1882 Victorian home opened to visitors on July 4, 2004. Former slave Barney Ford came to Breckenridge, Colo., to find his fortune during the 1860 gold rush, and became the town’s first black businessman. His business success is well documented in both Breckenridge and Denver, as he was named to Denver’s 1898 Social Register, but it was Ford’s quest for freedom and equality that highlights his historical legacy. His prominence and efforts are responsible for ensuring the Colorado State Constitution allowed "all males" the right to vote.

Edwin Carter Museum.

Built in 1875 to house a growing collection of Rocky Mountain Flora and Fauna by “Professor” Edwin Carter, the Carter Museum is part of the Summit Historical Society’s walking tour in the summer and is open for visitors from October to May as well.

Main Street Historic Museum

A historic museum at 111 S. Main Street features seasonal exhibits showcasing the wonders of Breckenridge’s past. The museum is free of charge and is open seven days a week.

Mountain Top Children’s Museum

This fun children’s museum offers exhibits, camps and workshops year-round for kids of all ages. Parents can take advantage of one-day sessions that keep kids busy and up to their ears in fun. The museum also offers hourly workshops for younger children and year-round exhibits.

Breckenridge Arts District

Located on the corner of Washington Ave. and South Ridge St., the newly formed Arts District of Breckenridge is a pedestrian-friendly area with outdoor and indoor spaces for workshops, artists-in-residence, galleries and various cultural events.

The district also includes the Robert Whyte House, offering ongoing workshops in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, handmade paper, clay and batik.

Workshops are open to children, teens and adults.

Mine Tours: Country Boy Mine

A fully functioning mine located just east of town on Wellington/French Gulch Road.

Visitors can pan for gold, tour the restored compressor house, portions of the mine and more.

Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing

Breckenridge boasts two quality Nordic centers: The Gold Run Nordic Center located at the Breckenridge Golf Club and the Breckenridge Nordic Ski Center on Ski Hill Road near the Peak 8 base area.

Gold Run Nordic Center

Over 20 kilometers of groomed skating and classic trails, in addition to a network of backcountry ski tours, and technique and waxing workshops.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides and a full service restaurant for evening dining are also available.

Breckenridge Nordic Ski Center

30 kilometres of groomed skating and classical skiing await guests, including 20 kilometres of snowshoe trails and five kilometers of dog walking trails.

Located less than a mile from the Peak 8 base area and accessible via the free shuttle system, the center operates out of an historic lodge with ski and snowshoe rentals, a retail shop, waxing services and a professional ski school with guest instructors and clinics.

NEW! Kite Boarding or Skiing

Colorado Kite Force

A new edition to Summit County, Colorado Kite Force offers snowkiting, kite boarding and kite skiing to guests who want to take their skiing or riding into the air.

Dog Sledding Tours

A variety of dog sledding tours for adults and children. Also offering a six-mile relay tour through the Middle Fork of the Swan River, available for up to six adults.

Snowmobile Tours

Offering a variety of tour options from “The Shortie,” a quick trip giving riders about an hour of snowmobile time, to “The Classic,” a scenic tour over Georgia Pass for stunning views of the Continental Divide and Park County. Dinner tours are available.

Fly Fishing

There are 4 full-service fishing shops who feature year-round fly-fishing excursions, equipment, flies and outdoor clothing

Breckenridge Ice Rinks

The Stephen C. West Ice Arena has two ice rinks (one indoor, one outdoor) located on Boreas Pass Road; both are open for public skating seven days a week. Skate rental and instruction available on-site

Breckenridge Recreation Center

Provides freeweights, cardio equipment, various aerobic classes, racquetball, basketball, two climbing walls, sauna, steamroom, hot tubs, a pool with a waterslide, skatepark, ball fields and outdoor courts. The Breckenridge Recreation Center also provides day care and "kids' night out" programming.

Do Your Own Pottery
